Help Decide on Plant Placement

Being asked on their opinion of where plants should go in the garden is sometimes just as good as being able to pick out what types of seeds are going to be planted. Kids like to help make decisions, so let them be a part in plant placement as much as possible.

Pull Weeds

Little kids actually think pulling weeds is a fun job, while older kids are more tuned in to your plan of trying to make work seem like a game.

Pick Veggies

If shown the proper way to pick vegetables, kids can be a huge help when it comes time to harvest all the garden goodies. You might even plant something that can be eaten right from the garden, such as cherry tomatoes or snow peas. Kids love it when harvesting and munching can be done at the same time.

Be in Charge of Watering

Any age child can help with watering the plants. Very small children can use a tiny watering can or scoop water out of a bucket and carry it to each plant. This keeps them occupied and lets them help too.

Plant an Herb Garden

Herbs are easy to grow and they also don’t take long to become mature enough to use. Kids can taste the herbs and learn the different uses for each type of herb. Who knows, you might end up inspiring your child to become a chef in the future.

Most kids enjoy digging in the dirt and seeing the changes plants go through. I’ve used some of these ideas with not only my own kids, but also with groups of kids in the community. Various organizations around town are always looking for something to get kids off the couch and enjoying the outdoors. What are some gardening ideas you have for kids?
