Best Plants for Patio Gardening ...

Gardening is an enjoyable pastime that everyone should be able to enjoy. People in the city or who live in an area where it’s basically impossible to plant a garden might find the information below very useful. I’ve listed the best plants for patio gardening. Many of these are even able to be grown on a balcony in an apartment building.

1

Tomatoes

These can be planted in a 5 gallon bucket, which make them very self-contained and easy to move. There are many gardening bags available as well that can be hung on a plant hook. The bag allows the tomato plants to grow from the bottom of the bag instead.

2

Cabbage

Any large planter can accommodate a cabbage plant. These plants don’t spread out a great distance or get too tall. The crinkly leaves are also very ornamental and sometimes colorful, depending on which type of cabbage you are growing.

3

Strawberries

Berries are always a nice treat, especially when you get to pick them right out of your patio garden. There are multi-tiered planters made specifically for growing strawberries. These have separate sections for each plant and hold the dirt in place. The tiered effect enables each plant to have plenty of dirt to grow in, but still doesn’t take up much room.

4

Herbs

You can have a single container that holds a variety of herbs. These plants begin small and the very first leaves are useful. There’s nothing like having fresh herbs to cook with. The long narrow containers work best, since these can be placed on the outside ledge of a window or along the railing of a balcony.

5

Salad Greens

Greens for salads come in a wide variety and each is best used when the plant gets its first leaves. Since salad greens are meant to be used as soon as the leaves are new, they don’t grow up to be large plants. These are another type of plant that is best grown in narrow boxes, similar to those mentioned for the herbs.

People who enjoy patio gardening usually find it easier to use a planting medium, instead of dirt. Garden centers carry all sorts of mediums to choose from. Have you tried patio gardening before? What were your favorite plants to grow? I’d also love to hear about methods you’ve found to work well.
