1

Be Patient

One of the most important gardening tips for newbies is to maintain patience, no matter what. When you first begin, you’re probably so excited and ready to jump right in. Yet, when you do, you’ll likely encounter some pests, issues with growing seasons, climate changes, and unexpected critters eating your new garden. Be patient! Gardening isn’t about finishing or getting things perfect on the first try. It’s about waiting things out and allowing your garden to teach you what it needs.

2

Enjoy the Fresh Air

One of the main benefits of gardening is it allows you to be out in the fresh air. Really appreciate that and learn to relish in it! Fresh air is one of the best things for your heart and mind. It can be easy to get frustrated about little issues while gardening, but remember the side benefits of it too. This will make it more enjoyable and seem more like a hobby than a chore.

3

Wear Good Gloves

You also need to be sure to wear good gardening gloves when you garden. Many chemical fertilizers you might use or chemicals in treated soil can irritate your skin. Find a good pair and keep them handy at all times. When you’re using heavy shovels and other tools, these gloves can also help prevent blisters on your hands when you’re just starting out.

4

Talk to a Specialist

One of the best things new gardeners can do is visit a local store that has a quality garden center and speak to a specialist when you’re buying new plants and flowers. These individuals are great to talk to on a regular basis about gardening as well. They can tell you a great deal that others might not be able to.

5

Grow What You Eat

If you’re starting a vegetable garden, it can be easy to buy lots of veggies out of excitement. First of all, don’t do this because they all have different growing seasons and you’ll likely get overwhelmed when they don’t turn out like you hoped. It also makes watering a pain! Instead, only buy what you eat the most of to grow. This way, you can give it your most special attention, and have more time to research the best way to grow those items. This also ensures that if your cucumber plant takes off and gives you an abundance of them, your family will actually eat them and not let them rot. Same with tomatoes, sweet peas, etc. Whatever you eat the most of, buy those and save the rest for a rainy day, no pun intended!

Be Prepared for the Costs

When you first start gardening, never assume it’s a cheap hobby, or worse, that it’s free! Haven’t you learned nothing is free in life, dear? Gardening is a well spent investment, but you need to be aware that expenses like tools, fertilizers, pots, crates, hoses, gloves, and flowers and seeds all cost something. Your water bill is also likely to go up a bit due to all your extra watering. Also, a note on shopping for supplies you should know is it’s easy to go picking up everything at the store and suffer sticker shock at the register. Just be prepared for the costs upfront and know that they aren’t necessarily always that high each season. Once you invest in good supplies and tools, these will last you a long time.

7

Don’t Buy Cheap Tools

Another tip on tools is never to buy cheap tools. Don’t skimp by on low quality shovels and other necessary items. Buy the good stuff and you’ll likely never have to buy them again.

8

Don’t Overcrowd

It can be easy to overcrowd your garden with either too many plants or garden figurines at first. I know you think it will look better, but watch out for a few snafus in the process. First, it can overcrowd your plants and not give them enough air to breathe. It also can overwhelm you when you have to spend 1 hour out in the hot July sun to water it all, or when those figurines start to fade from the sun.

9

Be Sun Smart

A few notes about the sun too, while we’re on the topic. First, you should wear sunscreen to protect yourself. it’s a must these days to prevent cancer. A good one is Neutrogena, and anything over 30 SPF should be good. Vitamin D is important to get from the sun, so if you want, stay in the sun around 15 minutes and then apply your sunscreen. This way you get the best of both worlds! Another note on the sun is to be aware of how much sun your plants need. Most all are different and need to be planted in areas where they’ll get optimal sun in the mornings and afternoons. This will allow them to flourish the best ways possible and also give you peace of mind they won’t die or dry out.
