Blueberries might just be my all-time favorite berry. They taste great, they are seedless, and they are incredibly simple to harvest. Taking care of blueberry bushes is easier than you might think. Here are 5 tips for growing healthy blueberry bushes that will help you enjoy a bountiful harvest.

5. Fertilize Properly

Feed your blueberry bushes in the spring before the leaves appear. Use an acid-rich fertilizer containing ammonium sulfate, ammonium nitrate, or sulfur-coated urea. These types help maintain the lower pH levels that blueberries prefer. For more tips on keeping your garden soil healthy, check out our complete guide to soil health.

4. Keep Watered

Consistent moisture is key. Since blueberries have high water content, a lack of irrigation will result in smaller berries. Use a thick layer of organic mulch around the base of your bushes to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Proper hydration is a fundamental part of successful summer gardening.

3. Prune Carefully

Winter is the best time to prune. Remove any dead, damaged, or diseased wood to keep the bush healthy. While it might be tempting to save every branch, removing excess growth encourages the plant to put its energy into producing larger, higher-quality berries next season.

2. Check the pH of the Soil

Blueberries thrive in slightly acidic soil with a pH between 4.0 and 4.5. If your soil isn't naturally acidic enough, incorporate sphagnum peat moss during planting. For established plants, you can apply specialized acid-loving fertilizers to help keep the environment optimal.

1. Plant in Full Sun

Blueberry bushes do not thrive in the shade; they need plenty of sunlight to produce a great crop. Aim for a spot in your garden that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sun daily. For more advice on choosing the perfect spot, visit the Old Farmer's Almanac blueberry growing guide.
