5 Tips on Growing Maple Trees ...

Maple trees are my favorite type of deciduous tree for the fall. I love seeing all the red, orange, and yellow hues. I live in an area where you have to plant your own maple tree if you want one. The woods here are filled with oak and cedar, so the autumn colors usually consist of green and brown. I recently planted 10 new maples in my yard, which helped me come up with these 5 tips on growing maple trees.

Start Seeds in Containers

It is usually easier to start trees outside, by sowing seeds directly in the ground. However, I’ve had more trees survive by starting seeds in containers placed underneath a larger tree. This gives them protection from the sun’s harsh rays and they don’t dry out as quickly.

Water Often!

This is extremely important for newly planted trees. They need the water to help them become more established in their new location. Once the weather begins to cool down, watering isn’t nearly as important even though the roots will continue to grow during the fall as well.

Plant during the Fall

Maple trees have the most success when they are planted during the early fall. This allows them to still have some growing time, but it’s not so hot that they will become stressed by the excess heat. Instead, they are able to focus all their energy into sending their roots deeper and out in all directions for a well-established nutrient-gathering system.

Prune Trees in Early Winter

Cutting off dead branches will help your maple tree to look healthier and shapelier. Lob off branches right next to the bud and at an angle. Pruning should take place in the winter when the tree is dormant. It’s also better for the tree if you don’t lob off tons of branches at once.

Quality Soil Gets Trees off to a Good Start

What plant doesn’t benefit from good soil? Maple trees like soil that is able to retain a bit of moisture, but not to the extent of being soggy. They can be fertilized twice a month when they begin sprouting their leaves again in the spring. Use a 10-10-10 fertilizer for best results.

I hope you can use these tips for your maple saplings. These are some of the easiest trees to sprout, but make sure to keep a close watch on them for the first two years. I’ve lost a few by slacking on care during my little seedling’s first summer. Do you like all maples or is there a certain variety you like better than the others?
