Begin Watering the Plants Furthest Away from the Spigot

Starting with the furthest section of the garden will help you eliminate the chance that you end up dragging the hose through any mud that might arise from the watering process. You will also be able to stretch the hose out and make sure you don’t have any kinks right from the start.

4

Spray Water Close to the Ground

Holding the nozzle up in the air to cover more surface area places most of the water on top of the leaves of your plants. The place where water is needed most of all is at ground level, so it seeps in to the roots quicker.

3

Check Moisture Level of the Ground before Watering

It’s easy to over-water shade gardens and it’s even possible to over-saturate your other garden spots. Check the soil before watering, especially if you’ve had rain within the previous few days. You’re soil might not be as fast-draining as you think and adding more water can do your plants more harm than good.

2

Use an Adjustable Spray Nozzle

When the nozzle is able to be adjusted, you can provide a fine mist for plants that have delicate leaves and/or blooms. There will also be times when you need to have a more powerful spray of water. Having an adjustable nozzle will be easier than taking time to change out one sprayer for another while watering your garden.

Water Early in the Morning

Watering during the heat of the day often causes plants to burn up when the sun dries the foliage out too quickly. It’s best to water early in the morning so the water has time to soak in before the sun emerges with full force.
