Berries make a healthy snack, are great in pancakes or on top of yogurt, and most people have very little difficulty getting berries to grow in their climate. Of course there are certain types of berry plants that do better in cooler climates than others. The 5 delicious kinds of berries listed below come with a brief description.

Blackberries

Thornless and non-thornless varieties of blackberries exist, both equally tasty. Most blackberry plants are hardy in zones 5 to 8, but some types can withstand winters in zone 4 as well. Blackberries appear around the middle of summer and continue well into the fall. Generally plants need to be at least a year old to produce fruit.

Honeyberries

Honeyberries are the color of blueberries and have an elongated shape. These woody plants grow to be around 3 feet tall, thrives in zones 2 to 9, and at least two plants need to be present to pollinate. They grow well in partial sunshine too.

When limited on garden space, this variety of blueberry is perfect. Dime-sized berries grow on 3 foot tall plants. This type of blueberry plant is self-pollinating and does well in zones 5 to 9. These blueberries can be used in anything a smaller variety of blueberry is.

Tayberries

If you like raspberries and blackberries, then you’ll adore tayberries! These berries are the color of a raspberry and have a combined flavor of the blackberry and raspberry. Not only are these berries yummy fresh, but they also make excellent wines, pies, jams, and jellies. They are very high in vitamin C too. They’ll grow in zones 5 to 8 and fruits can be harvested between the beginning of July to the middle of August.

Dewberries

These berries resemble blackberries, but are much larger in size. They also have a bit milder flavor, ripen quicker, and are produced by a vining plant instead of a bush. Dewberries grow well in zones 6 to 9 and are around an inch to an inch and a half in length.

A couple of these types of berries are new to me and I hope to try them someday. What types of berries are your favorites to eat or grow?
