5 Reasons to Have a Garden ...

I can think of at least 5 reasons to have a garden. I’m sure there are many, many more, but here are my 5 for you to look at. See what you think and be sure to add your own reasons in the comment section!

5 It’s Great Exercise

You might not feel the burn like you would with an aerobics class, but you definitely work up a sweat in the garden. Digging in the dirt, hoeing weeds, tilling the new garden plot, and planting flowers all keep the body moving.

Frequently asked questions

4 It Can Be a Conversation Piece

Unlike my husband, I’m not usually capable of starting up a conversation out of the blue. However, if someone starts talking about my garden then I’m right in there with plenty of feedback and can keep the conversation going with ease.

3 It is an Excellent Learning Experience

I don’t know anyone who has had a garden who hasn’t also learned something new by having one. Gardening teaches you about plants, tricks to keeping weeds from growing, and how to get creative with pest control.

2 You Can Provide Food for Your Family

Vegetable gardens are a bit more work than flower gardens, but they are well worth the time and effort it takes to keep one going. I like knowing that I’m providing fresh food for my family that I raised with my own hands. Plus it’s nice to know exactly what went into each vegetable. I don’t have to worry about harmful chemicals, since I don’t put them on my veggie plants.

1 It’s a Great Excuse to Be outside

There’s nothing like being outside on a warm sunny day. I have a hard time sitting still, so being able to do something while I’m outside makes the experience much more enjoyable. I can dig in the dirt, admire my flowers, pick veggies, and watch the birds and butterflies that flit around each garden.

I hope these reasons are enough to inspire you to create your own garden, if you don’t already have one started. Even if you live in the city you can have a small container garden. There are plenty of plants that do excellent in buckets and window boxes. What reasons made you want a garden? If you don’t have one, then what reason has stopped you from starting one?
